The Skies Proclaim the Work of His Hands
Psalm 19:1-4
M. Russell Thomas, PhD
God’s invitation to his children is, always has been, and will always be, if you will seek Me, you will find Me, if you seek Me with your whole heart. It always amazes me the great lengths God takes to be found. In my recent book, Seekers: A New Breed of Believers Walking an Ancient Path, I wrote about this playful, intentional desire of God to connection with his children and how it is personified in the Peek-a-Boo and Hide-and-Seek games that parents play with their children. God drops breadcrumbs before jumping out in plain view and joyously yelling, “Peek-a-Boo! This past week, God was playing Peek-a-Boo with all of us.
On the night of May 15th-16th (this past Sunday night), there was a lunar eclipse. But not just any eclipse. A total eclipse, also known as a blood moon, that is viewable to basically the entire earth. Now, before I go any further, let me explain that I’m not an astronomer. I’ve never really been interested in the stars and skies until I met my wife and she explained how that one of the expressions of God’s character is His handiwork in the skies and heavens. She shared with me Psalm 19:1-4, how that the heavens declare the glory of God and the skies the work of His hand. That verse goes on to say that daily, the heavens and skies “pour forth speech and reveal knowledge”. Somewhere along the way I realized her interest wasn’t related to her enjoyment in wearing bell-bottom jeans, but her keen “spiritual” ear to experience the creative arts side of God’s being. Many has been the time that we have gotten up in the middle of the night just to enjoy a meteor shower! So May 15th-16th was on her calendar. Around midnight we woke up and went to our back deck to watch the show. It was divine theater unfolding right before us and we had front row seats! It was spectacular and then Peek-a-Boo was over and God stepped out in plain view. We love those moments!
Karen pulled out her phone that happened to have some App on it that tells you what constellations you are viewing. You just point the phone to the sky and it identifies the constellation. She did so and Act I, Scene I, began. The first constellation popped up as “Scorpio”. According to popular thought, Scorpio is considered the bearer of life or death and its power is in its tail. Being the skeptic that I am, I ask myself, does this line up with the Word of God? No. God’s word says the power of life and death is actually at the north end of things and not the south end! That is, the power is in the tongue, and it is He that holds life. So, Scene 1 has something playing out that masquerades as truth but is actually deception and a lie. The power is not in the tail but in the mouth! And yet, Scene 1 has us focused on the tail. But God says, “No! Focus on My words…your words” (Proverbs 18:21). That’s where the life is! The curtain closes on Scene 1 as the crowds contemplates its message: deception and masquerade as it relates to the issue of life. And then it hits us as we think about the hottest, most important issue, maybe of our day. It’s the abortion issue and the big SCOTUS leak. Life or death? Blessing or curse? God’s theater and His plot and plans unfold with the presentation of the Scorpion.
On to Scene 2. In this scene we find out that many ascribe to the belief that the scorpion possesses both male and female sex organs. The crowd ponders the idea for a minute. Hummm…both male and female?! Breadcrumb number #2! Think Disney vs. DeSantis, school board mayhem and hostilities, and the extreme, irrational push of the transgender agenda on our children and society. The curtain drops again as Scene 2 ends. Here’s what we now know: Scene #1, deception & masquerade + Scene #2, both male and female sex organs in one creature = deception about life and gender. God’s theatre and His revelation to us is this: the Scorpion approaches with deception, while flashing its tail to distract from God’s word in your mouth! Specifically, the Scorpion is focused on attacking both Life and gender.
Finally, God saves the most powerful message for Scene 3. As Karen pointed her phone at the moon in full eclipse, it is observed to be directly in the middle of another constellation known as Libra. Libra is in the shape of scales. Scales that are balanced. The outline of scales appear on Karen’s phone screen and she whispers the word “justice” to me. So, let’s get this straight. Here’s a scorpion, with all its deception and masquerading about issues of life and gender approaching the scales and justice. And all of this is brought to our attention by a lunar eclipse that millions of people are viewing. God’s theater in the sky. He just as well yelled out, “Peek-a-Boo”!
Could it be that this week’s Blood Moon eclipse is prophetic? Remember, the Hebrew language has no word for coincidence. Specifically, could it be that God just sent us one huge message of encouragement and hope? Could it be that He just revealed that His justice will prevail? I believe so. Our job is now to keep bombarding heaven with prayers, to strengthen the knees that have grown feeble and to remember, that His word operating in our mouths is life. His justice over deception and masquerade will prevail. And like the moon being uncovered by the sun’s shadow, so shall His justice be! Hold on. Its coming! He’s coming. As the curtains fall on Act I, Scene 3, I can hear the Father shouting in unrestrained jubilation, “Peek-a-Boo, I see you!” Rejoice child of God! Your redemption draws near (Luke 21:28)!
